French at Warren

The French program at Warren is designed to instill a sense of curiosity for other languages, cultures and traditions while preparing the students for future foreign language learning in middle and high school. The focus is on authentic communication and as real as possible cultural experiences.

This year we will “travel” in French class to explore the African countries where French is spoken. We will also explore our closer French speaking neighbors in Quebec and Lousiana. We have discussed the reasons for learning French (living in a state with a French name voted number one by the Primary Unit) and we will be researching many of the French speaking countries locating them on our very own large mural map.

We continue to build our vocabulary playing games, learning poems, chants, and songs.

In keeping to Vermont Standards clothing, body parts and feelings will be a focus across the grades this year.Throughout the year we will recognize celebrations and holidays in French speaking cultures and learn associated games.

Research has shown that students who learn another language perform higher on standardized tests, after all, French provides the base for more than 50% of modern English vocabulary! Research also shows retention of new language is highest when students’ bodies are actively engaged in learning new material. The magic number 100, is how many times you need to hear something before it becomes internalized so my job is to actively engage your children while being redundantly repetitive! A challenge I love to meet through games, songs and skits.
